About the LBAP

Mendip District Council, with the support of EN funding, commissioned SERC to undertake the preparation of the plan with the following objectives:

1.To establish a baseline of biodiversity in the Mendip District in 1994 against which future changes can be monitored

2.To set up a framework for monitoring changes in biodiversity as a key test of the District's sustainable development strategy

3.To identify priority actions that need to be taken to conserve the most important features of biodiversity within the District.

The Mendip BAP was published in February 1995 and is believed to be the first Local Biodiversity Action Plan produced in the UK. The plan has progressed and evolved significantly since the time of its publication. Please note that the information on this website is limited to the contents of the published 1995 document and does not include recent or ongoing developments. For current information, such as:
  • revised list of Mendip BAP priority habitats, species and issues
  • new partnerships and projects
