About the LBAP

Bath & North East Somerset (B&NES) is a unitary authority. It lies east of Bristol and was once part of the old county of Avon. WILDthings - bringing biodiversity alive in B&NES - was launched in November 2000 to help co-ordinate local action for biodiversity in the Bath and North East Somerset District. The WILDthings Partnership provides a friendly forum and framework for individuals and organisations working with wildlife in the district.

B&NES is characterised by a diverse nature conservation interest, including two internationally important man-made habitats - Chew Valley Lake (Special Protection Area) and the Combe Down Stone Mines (candidate Special Area of Conservation). However a survey report from 1990 (Avon Phase 1 Survey) showed that only 6% B&NES held semi-natural vegetation i.e. had nature conservation interest based on 'natural' plant communities - so we can not be complacent and our vision must be to maintain this in good health, to restore it where necessary, and to extend and link it together wherever possible.

Local partnerships

    Core Group (oversees the running of Wildthings)

  • Bath and North East Somerset Council
  • Bristol Regional Environmental Records Centre
  • Cam Valley Wildlife Group
  • Environment Agency
  • Wider Partnership
    A number of different members from government bodies, to voluntary wildlife groups, local businesses, landowners and individuals.

    The wider partnership is organised into seven themed action groups. Other members participate in various celebrations, workshops and events organised throughout the year.
    This structure is currently under review, so some of the groups have ceased to meet:

  • Species & Habitats: attended by English Nature, the Environment Agency, Cam Valley Wildlife Group, the County Ecologist, Avon Wildlife Trust, the Hawk & Owl Trust and BRERC;
  • Farming: attended by landowners, local farmers, the County Ecologist, representatives from FWAG (Farming & Wildlife Advice Group) and the Duchy of Cornwall;
  • Council Owned Land: attended by B&NES Planning Services, Parks Department, Road and Traffic Safety, Property Services and Youth Services;
  • Tracking Wildlife: This group currently does not meet.
  • Monitoring Change: This group currently does not meet
  • Communication: This group currently does not meet. To implement the communication action plan B&NES hosts and organises regular meetings and events & produces a newsletter and the website;
  • Education: Many local wildlife organisations and groups contribute to education. There is an informal group where representatives meet occasionally to share ideas and information.
