Project
origins
Nature for Real came about from an idea of Action for Wildlife
to pilot techniques to encourage participation in and initiation
of projects to benefit local biodiversity. Specific emphasis was
placed on utilising local knowledge, ideas and interest, using Action
for Wildlife resources to provide support.
Action
for biodiversity
All of the projects raised awareness of biodiversity within each
community, and of how it is possible for individuals to get involved,
also enabling local networking.
In Lydford a survey of local hedgerows and dormice raised local
awareness of the needs of both and how hedgerow condition influences
landscape-wide opportunities for dormice. In Buckfastleigh, a wildlife
trail and leaflet suitable for families was produced. The trail
helps to showcase the exceptional biodiversity to be found close
to town, including the Deptford pink and the greater horseshoe bat.
Relationships
to sustainable development
Nature for Real has strong social benefits, helping develop social
networks through team work and linking local people with their local
environment. It has also helped to develop the skills of participating
individuals through undertaking environmental and biodiversity projects
and by providing resources for local people. This linking and capacity-building
will help to ensure that the environment is better cared-for and
protected in the long-term.
