Introduction

Here are just some of the variety of initiatives taking place across the region that have a positive effect on biodiversity. These are led by individual partners or other bodies. Projects linking biodiversity conservation with sustainable development have been published in the SWRBP booklet Natural Advantage: Case Studies in Sustainability. This can be downloaded here.

Biodiversity NBN SW Pilot

The NBN was a national project that built the UK’s first network of biodiversity information. The NBN SW Pilot project was concerned with providing a practical test of a working NBN at a regional scale in the SW of England. It aims were to build partner experience of the NBN and to demonstrate to partners how increased data sharing can facilitate the achievement of nature conservation objectives. The intial three years of this project have now been completed and plans to continue the work are in development.

Wessex Water BAP

Wessex Water Biodiversity Action Plan, WWBAP, was the first corporate initiative of its kind to be based on the UK Biodiversity Action Plan, UKBAP, and has been acknowledged by the UK government report 'Sustaining the Variety of Life' as a best-practice example of corporate involvement in biodiversity work. It draws on a long tradition of wildlife conservation work within Wessex Water and has developed into a coherent package of activity, including:

SW Renewable Energy Assessment

‘REvision 2010’ is a new project designed to work in partnership with the sub-regions within the South West. REvision 2010 will provide technical support and a process of stakeholder engagement aimed at identifying the opportunities, implications and constraints for sub-regional renewable electricity targets in the SW.

For the purposes of this project the ‘sub-regions’ refer to the 6 counties and the former Avon area. Therefore the project will encourage authorities to establish seven sub-regional targets throughout the whole region.
