Key factors

Extent/Distribution

This section covers woodlands, parklands and veteran trees

Purbeck is not historically a well-wooded area, but ancient woodlands occur on the north facing scarp of the chalk ridge, on the periphery of the heathland area and in the Corfe Vale and Kimmerideg Valley. Rare plants found here include butterfly orchid and narrow-leaved lungwort. In addition, the unpolluted air in purbeck and sheltered valleys provide the conditions under which parkland and veteran trees can support nationally important lichen species
